The Bandipur and Mudumalai Night Traffic Ban — What Closes, When, and When to Leave
One court order from 2010 governs every drive between Ooty and Mysore, and most travellers meet it for the first time at a barrier in the dark. Here is the rule, both routes, and the arithmetic that keeps you on the right side of it.

The short version, for anyone reading this in a car
If you are in Ooty and heading north to Mysore or Bangalore, you must be through the Theppakadu gates before 21:00. From Ooty town that is about 1 hour 15 minutes via Masinagudi. Leave by 17:00 to be comfortable, by 18:30 at the absolute latest. After that the barrier is down until 06:00 and there is no way around it — the alternative route uses the same gates.
What is restricted, and for whom
The ban applies to through traffic on the highways crossing the reserves. Local access and emergency vehicles are handled separately at the gates.

Why it exists, and why the petitions keep failing
The roads in question cut through Bandipur and Mudumalai, two of the most important elephant and tiger habitats in southern India, and they cut through them at the hours when animals move. Night traffic on a forest highway is a collision problem and a disturbance problem at the same time. The Karnataka High Court imposed the 9 pm to 6 am closure in 2010, and it has been challenged repeatedly since, largely by Kerala interests who would prefer an unbroken road link. Those petitions have not succeeded, and as of the middle of 2026 the ban is in force and enforced.
It is worth knowing this because the rumour that it has been lifted circulates constantly, usually from someone who passed through at 20:45 and thought the gate was open all night. Plan around the rule, not around the rumour. Like the e-pass, this is a court-supervised measure rather than a fixed statute, which is precisely why we re-check it every month rather than writing it down once.
Departure times that work
Measured from Ooty town to the gates via the Masinagudi road, which takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. The Gudalur route takes roughly half an hour longer to reach its gate, so subtract that from every departure time below.

Both routes, one gate
The most common misunderstanding is that the longer route avoids the closure. It does not. The Masinagudi and Sigur route — about 124 km on the final leg, cars only, 36 hairpin bends — and the Gudalur route — about 158 km, the one buses and trucks are permitted on — both pass the same forest gates at Theppakadu. Choosing between them is a question of vehicle type and comfort, not of timing.
Nor is there a practical bypass. The Mananthavadi, Kutta, Gonikoppal and Hunsur road exists, but it serves Kerala traffic and adds hours that no Ooty traveller wants at 10 pm. If you are at Theppakadu at 21:05, the honest options are a room in Masinagudi or a long wait. We have had guests do both, and the room is better.
How this changes trip planning
Going to Ooty
- A Bangalore departure after about 15:00 will not reach Ooty that night
- Friday-evening-after-work starts do not work for this destination
- Arriving before dark also means you take the Sigur hairpins in daylight
- If you are late, stop at Gundlupet or Masinagudi and climb in the morning
Leaving Ooty
- Leave by 17:00 for Mysore or Bangalore; the gate, not the distance, sets the time
- An evening safari at Mudumalai means sleeping on that side, not driving back
- Coimbatore-bound travellers are unaffected — the Coonoor ghat has no forest gate
- For a Sunday-night flight from Bangalore, allow the gate plus 145 km from Mysore
- Corporate and school groups: put the 17:00 departure in the agenda from day one
The Coimbatore route has no gate at all
This is the quiet argument for approaching Ooty from the south. The Coimbatore road — Mettupalayam, Kallar, the Coonoor ghat's 14 hairpin bends, 88 km in two and a half hours — passes no forest closure of any kind. You can leave Ooty at 9 pm for a midnight flight out of CJB and nobody will stop you, and you can drive up at 4 am to catch a sunrise.
For travellers from Bangalore who are flying rather than driving, that is worth knowing: a flight into Coimbatore removes the gate from your plan entirely. For everyone driving from the north, the gate is simply a fact to build the itinerary around, and the whole of it fits in one sentence — be through Theppakadu before nine.

Has the Bandipur night ban been lifted?
No. It has been challenged repeatedly, mostly by Kerala petitioners, and those challenges have not succeeded. As of the last verification in September 2026 it is in force. Because it sits in ongoing litigation rather than settled statute, we re-check the position monthly.
What happens if I arrive at the gate after 9pm?
You wait until 06:00 or you turn back. The barrier is physical and staffed, and there is no discretion for tourist vehicles. Travellers in that position usually take a room in Masinagudi or Gundlupet, which is why those villages have more accommodation than their size suggests.
Does the night ban affect the drive from Coimbatore to Ooty?
Not at all. The Coimbatore route runs through Mettupalayam and up the Coonoor ghat, 88 km with no forest closure anywhere on it. You can travel that road at any hour, which is one of the reasons we recommend approaching the Nilgiris from the south.
Can I do a Mudumalai safari and return to Ooty the same evening?
Not for the evening slot. Forest department safaris run early morning and late afternoon, and the late slot finishes too close to the closure for a comfortable climb back up the Sigur ghat's 36 bends. Take the morning safari, or stay the night in Masinagudi.
Are two-wheelers allowed through Bandipur at night?
No, and their restriction starts earlier — from around 18:00 on the Bandipur stretch rather than 21:00. Riders heading to Ooty from Mysore should plan to be clear of the forest sections well before dark.
