Ooty Family Tour Packages — Prices by Family Size, and an Itinerary Children Survive

Most family itineraries are adult itineraries with a boating stop added. This one is built the other way round: around the bends, the meal times and the two hours in the afternoon when a six-year-old stops cooperating.

In short

An Ooty family package is ₹42,850 for four people over 2 nights from Coimbatore — ₹10,713 each — and ₹114,800 for twelve in a tempo traveller, or ₹9,567 each. The vehicle is the line that splits, so larger families pay less per head. Children under five sharing a bed travel free; ages five to eleven are typically 50–70% of the adult rate.

The hairpin problem, and how we route around it

The single most common thing that goes wrong on a family trip to Ooty is not weather or hotels. It is a child being sick on the ghat. The default road up, the Coonoor ghat on NH181, has 14 hairpin bends across roughly 40 km of climbing. The Sigur ghat on the Mysore side has 36, and the Manjur backup from Karamadai has 48. None of that is a problem for an adult who has done it before, and all of it is a problem for a seven-year-old in a middle seat.

So with young children we do three things. We offer the Kotagiri ghat, SH15, which has only 4 bends across 33 km from Mettupalayam — it is a longer drive and a much gentler one, and for a family arriving from Coimbatore it costs about 30 minutes. We seat children in the front or the middle row facing forward, never in a third row. And we plan a stop at Burliar or Kallar so that the climb is broken rather than continuous. Between them these three things solve most of it; the rest is medication taken 30 minutes before the climb, not after the first bend.

What children actually like here

Reliably a hit

  • The toy train — a 55-minute ride, second class at ₹140–295, and the windows open
  • Boating on Ooty Lake, ₹200–500 per boat, which for a family of four is the cheapest hour of the trip
  • Theppakadu elephant camp in Mudumalai, 37–40 km out
  • The pine forest and the shooting points at 6th and 9th Mile, where there is space to run
  • Chocolate shops at Charing Cross, which is not a tourist attraction but is the one they will talk about

Usually a mistake

  • Doddabetta at 11 am in season — 45 minutes of queueing on a single-lane road for a view in cloud
  • Three gardens in one day; after the first, they are the same garden
  • Avalanche with under-sevens: an hour and a quarter each way, then a jeep, then no facilities
  • A 9-stop day. Five is the limit, and four is better with under-tens
  • Evening departures from Mudumalai — the forest gates shut to cars from 21:00 to 06:00

Three days at a child's pace

Day 1 · Late start, short day

Leave Coimbatore at 08:00 rather than 06:30, break the climb at Burliar for tea and a walk, and reach Ooty around 11:30. Botanical Garden after lunch at ₹50 an adult, then the hotel by 16:00. The first day of a hill trip is for arriving, not for achieving.

Day 2 morning · Doddabetta at 08:30, then down

Early enough to avoid both the cloud and the queue, ₹10 entry with ₹30 parking, and back in the car within 45 minutes. Then the 19 km to Coonoor with a stop at Ketti Valley View to break it up.

Day 2 afternoon · Sim's Park and a real lunch break

Ninety minutes in Sim's Park, which has space and slopes and is far less crowded than Ooty's gardens, then a proper sit-down lunch in Coonoor rather than a packet at a viewpoint. Back up by 17:00, which leaves time in the hotel before dinner.

Day 3 · The train, then home

The 09:26 to Coonoor arriving 10:20 is the highlight of the trip for most children, and the driver brings the luggage down by road to meet you. Lunch at Mettupalayam, Coimbatore by mid-afternoon. Book the tickets on IRCTC 60 days ahead — this is the one part of the plan nobody can rescue at short notice.

Feeding a family in Ooty, and the senior-citizen variant

Meal timings in the hills run earlier than most families expect. Restaurants in Ooty town serve lunch from about 12:30 and many kitchens wind down by 21:00, and at viewpoints the only option is a stall. Carry biscuits and water for the gaps between stops, refill the bottles rather than buying more — the Nilgiris plastic ban is enforced — and plan lunch as a stop in the itinerary rather than as something that will happen somewhere.

The same itinerary works for grandparents with three changes: Kotagiri ghat instead of Coonoor for the climb, Doddabetta's upper platform skipped in favour of the car park view if stairs are difficult, and Dolphin's Nose swapped for Ketti Valley View, which is a roadside stop rather than a walk. We would also add a night: with three generations in the car, the difference between two nights and three is the difference between a holiday and a schedule. Nothing about the Nilgiris is strenuous at 2,240 m, but the altitude does make stairs feel longer than they are.

Questions we answer daily

How much is an Ooty package for a family of 4?

₹42,850 for two nights and three days from Coimbatore in a mid-range hotel with an SUV held throughout, which is ₹10,713 per person. Six people in an Innova pay ₹59,950, or ₹9,992 each, because the vehicle cost splits further.

Is Ooty good for a family with toddlers?

Yes, with routing care. The climb has 14 hairpin bends on the usual road, so we offer the 4-bend Kotagiri ghat instead, break the drive at Burliar and keep sightseeing to four or five stops a day. Boating, the toy train and the elephant camp at Theppakadu all work well with under-fives.

Do children pay for an Ooty tour package?

Under fives sharing a bed travel free and count as a seat in the vehicle. Ages five to eleven with an extra mattress are typically 50 to 70% of the adult rate, depending on the hotel. Entry tickets are charged at actuals for everyone — Doddabetta is ₹10 and the Botanical Garden ₹50.

What can children do in Ooty when it rains?

The toy train still runs in ordinary rain, and the tea factory and museum at ₹20 to ₹30, the wax museum and the indoor attractions near town all work. What does not work in heavy rain is the viewpoint list: Doddabetta and Dolphin's Nose are inside the cloud from June to September.

Which vehicle is right for 8 people?

Either a 12 to 14 seat tempo traveller, which keeps everyone together and gives you luggage space, or an Innova plus a sedan. We usually recommend the traveller: two vehicles means two drivers to keep together on a hairpin road and one family that spends the trip in different cars.

How do we avoid travel sickness on the Ooty ghat?

Take the Kotagiri ghat, which has 4 bends instead of the Coonoor ghat's 14; sit children forward-facing in the front or middle row; break the climb with a stop; and give any medication 30 minutes before the first bend rather than after it. Cold air from an open window helps more than air conditioning.

Is three days enough for a family trip to Ooty?

Two nights and three days covers Ooty town and Coonoor at a child's pace. If you want Mudumalai's elephant camp as well, take a third night — a day trip to Theppakadu at 37 to 40 km plus the climb back is too long a day with young children.

Can you arrange a family room or connecting rooms?

Yes, and it is worth asking early. Ooty's mid-range properties have limited family rooms and they go first in April, May and the last fortnight of December. If we cannot get a family room we will tell you before you pay rather than putting a mattress on the floor of a twin.
