Ooty Tour Packages from Bangalore — Routes, Fares and the Forest Gate That Closes at 9pm
Two roads, one forest, and a gate that shuts at nine every night. Getting a Bangalore weekend in Ooty right is mostly a question of departure times, and almost nobody tells you that before you have booked.
In short
Bangalore to Ooty is 265–275 km and 5 to 6 hours by either the Gudalur route (158 km final leg, buses permitted) or the Masinagudi route (124 km, cars only, 36 hairpin bends). The Bandipur and Mudumalai forest roads close to all cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00, so leave Ooty by 5 pm on the way home. A 2N/3D package starts around ₹12,500 per person and a sedan one way is ₹6,500.

The one rule that decides your weekend
Both roads from Bangalore pass the same forest gates at Theppakadu, and those gates are closed to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00 under a Karnataka High Court order in force since 2010. Two-wheelers are restricted from around 18:00 on the Bandipur stretch. There is no practical night alternative between Ooty and Mysore. If you leave Bangalore after 3 pm on a Friday, you are not reaching Ooty that night.
When to leave Ooty for the drive home
Times from Ooty town to the Theppakadu gates via the Masinagudi road, then onward. The gate is the deadline; everything else is arithmetic.
| Leave Ooty | At the forest gate | Mysore | Bangalore | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14:00 | 15:15 | 17:30 | ≈ 20:00 | Comfortable, and you eat dinner at home |
| 16:00 | 17:15 | 19:30 | ≈ 22:00 | Fine. Daylight on the hairpins |

| 18:30 | 19:45 | 22:00 | ≈ 00:30 | Cutting it fine. One puncture and you are stopped |

Route A via Gudalur, Route B via Masinagudi
Route A — Mysore, Gundlupet, Gudalur. The final leg into the Nilgiris is about 158 km and it is the road buses and trucks are permitted on. It is longer, steadier and the climb is spread over a greater distance, which makes it the right choice for anyone in a coach, anyone towing anything, and anyone whose passengers dislike hairpin bends. Your check-post is Mel Gudalur.
Route B — Mysore, Bandipur, Masinagudi, Sigur ghat. The final leg is about 124 km, so it saves roughly 30 km, and it climbs the Sigur ghat's 36 hairpin bends. It is cars only. It is steep, it is spectacular, and it is not the route for a 20-seat coach, a nervous driver or a car with four adults and a full boot in monsoon rain. Your check-post is Masinagudi.
Both routes pass the same forest gates, so neither is a way around the night ban. We default to Route A for tempo travellers and coaches and Route B for cars in daylight, and we tell you which one the driver is taking before you leave rather than after you are on it.
A Bangalore weekend that actually works
Friday, out by 14:00
Leaving Bangalore by 2 pm puts you at the forest gates well before they close and in Ooty between 19:00 and 20:00. Leaving at 18:00 after work does not work: you would reach Theppakadu after 21:00 and sleep in Gundlupet.
Friday night · check in and stop
Five to six hours of driving has already happened. Do not plan anything for Friday evening except dinner. Ooty at 2,240 m is 10 to 12°C after dark for most of the year, which is a pleasant surprise and a cold one if you packed for Bangalore.
Saturday · the full day
Doddabetta at 08:30 before the cloud, ₹10 entry and ₹30 parking, then the Botanical Garden at ₹50, lunch, and the lake. Or swap the afternoon for Coonoor, 19 km down, if you would rather have tea estates than gardens. One or the other, not both.
Sunday morning · one thing, done properly
Either Pykara at 21 km and 55 minutes, or the 09:26 toy train down to Coonoor at ₹140 to ₹295 with the car meeting you there. Both finish in time for the drive.
Sunday, leave by 17:00
The gate, again. Leaving Ooty at 5 pm puts you through Theppakadu around 18:15 and home by about 23:00. Leaving at 19:00 means a night in Masinagudi you did not plan for.
Bangalore-specific practicalities
Before you set off
- File the free Nilgiris e-pass at epass.tnega.org against your registration number — Karnataka plates need it
- Your check-post will be Masinagudi or Mel Gudalur depending on the route
- Green tax of ₹150 to ₹300 is collected in cash at the post, on top of the pass
- Karnataka to Tamil Nadu means an inter-state permit on a commercial vehicle; it is inside our fares
- Weekend e-pass caps of 8,000 vehicles fill in April, May and late December
Weekend planning
- Three nights is the right length from Bangalore; two leaves one real sightseeing day
- Adding Mysore on the way back costs nothing in distance and one night in time
- Coorg is the other natural extension and turns this into a 5 to 6 night circuit
- Fuel and a driver's night halt are inside our quoted fare, not added later
- In monsoon, Route A via Gudalur is the safer of the two
Adding Mysore or Coorg
Mysore sits on the road home, 125 km from Ooty and three to three and a half hours away, so adding it costs you a night rather than a detour. The catch is the same gate: a Mysore stop means clearing Theppakadu in the afternoon, spending the evening there and driving the last 145 km to Bangalore the next morning. Done that way it is a genuinely good addition.
Coorg turns the trip into a five or six night circuit and is best treated as a separate destination rather than a stop, since the published mid-range price for a Mysore, Ooty and Coorg six-night tour runs ₹26,000 to ₹35,200 per person. If Ooty is the main event and Coorg is an afterthought, our view is to keep the nights in the Nilgiris — four nights there covers Ooty town, Coonoor, Pykara, Avalanche and Mudumalai with no transfer day at all.
Questions we answer daily
How far is Ooty from Bangalore by road?
265 to 275 km, which takes 5 to 6 hours. The Gudalur route has a final leg of about 158 km and is the one buses use; the Masinagudi route's final leg is about 124 km but climbs the Sigur ghat's 36 hairpin bends and is suitable for cars only.
What time do the Bandipur and Mudumalai gates close?
They are closed to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00 every night, under a Karnataka High Court order dating from 2010 that is still enforced. Two-wheelers face restrictions from around 18:00 on the Bandipur stretch. Both routes between Ooty and Mysore pass the same gates, so there is no night alternative.
What time should we leave Ooty to drive back to Bangalore?
By 17:00. That puts you at the Theppakadu gates around 18:15, Mysore by 20:30 and Bangalore by about 23:00, with daylight on the hairpin bends. Leaving after 19:45 means arriving at a closed gate and waiting until 06:00.
What is the cab fare from Bangalore to Ooty?
₹6,500 one way in a sedan, ₹7,500 in a premium sedan and ₹11,000 in an Innova, all-in with fuel, driver, tolls, the inter-state permit and 5% GST. Round trips with the vehicle held for sightseeing in Ooty are quoted per trip rather than doubled.
How many days are needed for Ooty from Bangalore?
Three nights. The road takes 5 to 6 hours each way, so a two-night trip leaves exactly one full sightseeing day. Three nights gives you Ooty town, Coonoor and one of Pykara or Mudumalai without spending the holiday in the car.
Do Karnataka-registered cars need the Nilgiris e-pass?
Yes. Only TN-43 Nilgiris registrations are exempt, so every Bangalore car needs a free pass from epass.tnega.org, filed before you travel. You will show the QR at Masinagudi or Mel Gudalur along with your licence, RC and hotel booking, and pay green tax of ₹150 to ₹300 in cash.
Which route is better from Bangalore, Gudalur or Masinagudi?
Gudalur for coaches, tempo travellers and anyone who dislikes hairpin bends — it is longer but steadier and is the permitted bus route. Masinagudi for cars in daylight, saving about 30 km at the price of the Sigur ghat's 36 bends. Neither avoids the night gate.
Can we leave Bangalore on Friday evening after work?
Not if you want to sleep in Ooty. A 6 pm departure puts you at Theppakadu after 21:00 and the gate will be shut, so you would spend the night in Gundlupet or Masinagudi. Leave by 14:00, or make it a Saturday morning start and take a third night.
Is a self-drive trip from Bangalore sensible?
For confident hill drivers in daylight, yes — but take the Gudalur route rather than Sigur's 36 bends in an unfamiliar car, file your own e-pass, and plan the return around the 21:00 gate. If anyone in the group is uncertain about ghat driving, a driver for the five hours costs less than the trip is worth.
