Ooty Tour Package, 2 Nights and 3 Days — the Itinerary Written Hour by Hour

Ooty town on day one, the whole Coonoor side on day two, the toy train and the drive out on day three. This is the trip nine out of ten first-time visitors should book, and this is what every hour of it looks like.

In short

A 2 nights / 3 days Ooty and Coonoor package costs ₹42,850 for four people from Coimbatore in a mid-range hotel — ₹10,713 each — with the vehicle held throughout. The plan covers Ooty town on day one, Coonoor's 19 km and 14 hairpin bends on day two, and one leg of the toy train on day three. Total driving inside the hills: 8 to 10 hours.

Day 1 — up the ghat and around Ooty town

06:30 · Leave Coimbatore

Out through Mettupalayam on NH181. The first 46 km is flat and takes about an hour and a quarter, and it is the only part of the day where you can make up time. Breakfast is at Mettupalayam, not on the ghat, because there is nowhere sensible to stop between Kallar and Burliar.

08:00 · Kallar check-post and the climb

E-pass QR scanned, green tax paid in cash — ₹150 to ₹200 for a car, ₹200 to ₹300 for an SUV. Then 14 hairpin bends over about 40 km. Allow 90 minutes and tell anyone prone to travel sickness to sit in the front and look ahead, not at a phone.

09:45 · Tea break at Burliar or Coonoor

A working tea factory rather than a viewpoint. Entry is ₹20 to ₹30, the tasting is usually included, and it takes 30 minutes. This is also where you stop being a person who drove somewhere and start being on holiday.

11:00 · Botanical Garden

₹50 per adult plus ₹50 if you carry a camera, open 09:00 to 18:00, 2 km from Charing Cross. Give it 90 minutes. It is 55 acres on a slope, so wear shoes you can walk in and do not try to see all of it.

13:00 · Lunch, then check in

Most Ooty hotels release rooms at noon, so this is the natural point to drop bags. Do not schedule check-in for 10 am and then sit in a lobby — that is an hour of your first day gone.

15:00 · Rose Garden and Ooty Lake

Rose Garden is ₹40 and takes 45 minutes. The lake boat house closes at 18:00 and boating is ₹200 to ₹500 per boat, not per person, which matters if there are five of you. Sunset over the lake is the photograph everyone takes home.

18:00 · Charing Cross on foot

The market, the chocolate shops and the tea sellers are all walkable from the town centre. Buy the tea here rather than at a viewpoint stall, where the same packet is nearly double.

Day 2 — Doddabetta, and the whole of Coonoor

08:30 · Doddabetta first, deliberately

9 to 11 km out and 30 to 45 minutes up a single-lane road, entry ₹10 with parking from ₹30. Go early for two reasons: the cloud usually arrives on the 2,637 m summit by late morning, and by 11 am the approach road queues in season.

10:15 · Down to Coonoor

19 km, 45 to 60 minutes, 14 more hairpin bends. Coonoor sits about 400 m lower than Ooty and is noticeably warmer, which surprises people who packed only for Ooty's temperatures.

11:00 · Sim's Park

Twelve hectares of botanical garden built on a hillside rather than a lawn, with several hundred plant species and a genuinely steep set of paths. Ninety minutes, and it is much less crowded than Ooty's gardens.

13:00 · Lunch in Coonoor

Eat where the drivers eat, on the Bedford or Mount Road side, rather than at the viewpoint stalls. It is roughly half the price and considerably better.

14:30 · Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock

Both are cloud-dependent, and in June to September we check before driving out: in heavy mist Dolphin's Nose is a white wall and there is no point standing in it. On a clear day you can see Catherine Falls across the valley.

16:30 · A working tea estate

Half an hour among the bushes with someone who can explain two-leaves-and-a-bud is what makes the rest of the trip make sense. This is also the best light of the day for photographs of the slopes.

17:30 · Ketti Valley View on the way back

It sits on the road between Coonoor and Ooty, so it costs you ten minutes rather than a detour. Back at the hotel by 18:30, which leaves a real evening rather than an exhausted one.

Day 3 — the toy train, then down

08:15 · Check out, luggage in the car

Ooty station is a five-minute drive from most town hotels. If you have not booked the train, this is when you go to the tea museum instead — the timings below assume you have.

09:26 · Train 56139 to Coonoor

A UNESCO World Heritage mountain railway, arriving Coonoor at 10:20. Book second class at ₹140 to ₹295 on IRCTC when the window opens 60 days ahead. First class is one carriage of 8 to 16 seats at ₹600 to ₹1,100 and sells out in hours from April to June; the view from it is exactly the same.

10:20 · Driver meets you at Coonoor

Your luggage has come down by road while you came down by rail, which is the whole trick of this day. From here you are already 19 km closer to the plains.

11:00 · Whatever you missed

Usually Lamb's Rock if day two was cloudy, or the Highfield tea factory, or half an hour in Coonoor market for spices and eucalyptus oil.

12:30 · Down the ghat

Lunch at Mettupalayam rather than in the hills, and expect an eight to ten minute wait at the level crossing if the train is running. Coimbatore by about 15:30, or CJB airport for anything departing after 18:00.

Two alternative day twos

If you have seen Coonoor before, or you want the Nilgiris rather than the towns, we swap day two for one of these at no change in price.

Pykara and Avalanche

Pykara at 21 km and 55 minutes for the falls, the lake and the pine forest at 6th Mile, then Avalanche at 22 to 25 km. Avalanche needs a 09:00 arrival, forest entry of about ₹40 a head and a shared jeep at roughly ₹250 — there is no online booking and private vehicles stop at the parking area.

  • A longer day, 9 to 10 hours
  • Best in February, March and September
  • No Coonoor on this version

Mudumalai and Masinagudi

Theppakadu elephant camp is 37 to 40 km and an hour and a quarter down the Sigur side. Forest department safaris run early and late, so we take the morning slot and climb back before dark — the forest roads close to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00.

  • Best with children
  • 36 hairpin bends on Sigur ghat
  • Back in Ooty by 17:00

Why this shape works and a four-stop-a-day version does not

The itinerary above has five to seven stops a day and about three and a half hours of driving. That is not laziness; it is the arithmetic of a place where the roads average 25 to 35 km/h. Doddabetta is 9 to 11 km away and takes 45 minutes each way. Coonoor is 19 km and takes an hour. A plan with nine stops on it is a plan where every stop gets 25 minutes, including the two that were 40 minutes of driving apart.

The sequencing matters as much as the count. Gardens in the morning because the light is soft and the queues are short. Doddabetta before 10 am because the cloud comes. Viewpoints before 4 pm because the haze builds. The toy train on the departure morning because it converts a dead travel day into the best hour of the trip. Any operator can list the same seven places; the order is what decides whether you saw them.

On months: this itinerary is at its best in February and March, when rainfall is 10mm and 26mm and every viewpoint works. It is at its most compromised in June to August, at 180 to 209mm, when we would move Dolphin's Nose and Doddabetta to whichever morning is clear and put the estates and the museum into the wet one.

Questions we answer daily

What is the price of a 2 nights 3 days Ooty package?

₹42,850 total for four people from Coimbatore in a mid-range 3-star, which is ₹10,713 each with the vehicle held for all three days. A couple pays ₹25,075 between them because the vehicle does not split, and twelve people in a tempo traveller pay ₹9,567 each.

Is 2 nights and 3 days enough for Ooty and Coonoor?

Yes — it is the right length for both towns. You get one full day in Ooty, one full day in Coonoor and a toy train leg on the departure morning, with 8 to 10 hours of driving inside the hills. Add a third night only if you also want Pykara at 21 km or Avalanche at 22 to 25 km.

Can this itinerary start from Bangalore or Chennai?

It can, but the arrival day changes. Bangalore is 265 to 275 km and 5 to 6 hours away, so you would reach Ooty in the afternoon and lose most of day one. From Chennai, at about 535 km, we recommend the overnight train to Coimbatore and this plan runs exactly as written.

Do I need to book the toy train myself?

Yes. Indian Railways tickets must be in the traveller's own name, so you book on IRCTC when the window opens 60 days before travel. Take second class at ₹140 to ₹295 — first class is a single carriage of 8 to 16 seats at ₹600 to ₹1,100 that disappears within hours in the April to June season.

What if we do not want to get up at 6:30 on day one?

Then we leave Coimbatore at 08:30 and you lose the Botanical Garden from day one, picking it up on day three instead of the train. Every hour later you start is an hour taken from the end of day one, because the 88 km climb does not get faster.

Can you do this package with our own car?

Yes. We price the plan, file the e-pass against your registration number and put a driver in your vehicle if you would rather not take the 14 bends yourself, which typically costs ₹1,400 to ₹1,800 a day plus his bata. You save the vehicle line and keep the planning.

Which hotel will we stay in?

We name the property before you pay, never 'or similar'. Mid-range means a 3-star in or near Ooty town so that the morning drive to the gardens is ten minutes rather than forty; budget usually means a clean guest house slightly out of the centre; premium usually means a colonial-era or estate property with heating, which matters in December and January when nights reach 6 to 8°C.

How much cash should we carry for the three days?

About ₹450 to ₹700 per adult for entry tickets, plus ₹150 to ₹300 per vehicle for green tax at Kallar and a few hundred for parking. Boating at ₹200 to ₹500 is charged per boat. Ooty town takes UPI almost everywhere; the gates and the forest posts do not.
