Ooty Sightseeing by Car — Five Day Routes With Distances, Timings and Fixed Prices
For travellers already in Ooty with their own room. Pick a route, know what it covers before you get in, and pay a price agreed in writing rather than watching a meter.
In short
Ooty sightseeing runs as five fixed day routes, each about 8 hours. The town route is ₹2,000–2,500 in a sedan and ₹3,300–3,800 in an Innova; Avalanche and Mudumalai are full-day routes from ₹3,200. Distances run from 45 km for the town circuit to 90 km for Mudumalai. Entry fees, green tax and forest permits are separate and listed below.

The five routes and what they cost
Each route is a full day with the vehicle held throughout, priced by vehicle rather than by head. Fuel, driver, parking and 5% GST are inside every figure.

Route 1 — Ooty town, about 45 km
09:00 · Botanical Garden
₹50 an adult and ₹50 for a camera, 2 km from Charing Cross, open from 09:00. Ninety minutes, and the first half hour is the quietest it will be all day.
10:45 · Doddabetta
9 to 11 km out, 30 to 45 minutes up a single-lane road to 2,637 m, entry ₹10 and parking from ₹30. On a clear day you see both the Coimbatore plains and the Mysore plateau; from about 11:00 in season the road queues.
13:00 · Tea factory and museum
₹20 to ₹30, tasting usually included, 40 minutes. It also happens to be the best place on this route to buy tea at something close to a sensible price.
14:30 · Rose Garden
₹40, and it takes 45 minutes rather than the two hours some itineraries allow. It sits above the town with a view back over it.
16:00 · Ooty Lake and the boat house
Boating is ₹200 to ₹500 per boat and the last boats go out before the 18:00 close. Finish at Charing Cross on foot; the driver waits rather than circling.
Route 2 — Pykara, about 60 km
09:00 · Out on the Mysore road
Pykara is 21 km and about 55 minutes from town. Going early matters here: the light on the lake is better before noon and the coach parties arrive from about 11:00.
10:00 · Pykara Falls
Roughly ₹50 entry and a short walk down to the falls. In monsoon it is loud and dramatic and the last stretch of path is slippery — proper shoes, not sandals.
11:30 · Pykara Lake and boating
A quieter body of water than Ooty Lake with boat rides on the reservoir. An hour is right; two is a lot of sitting.
13:30 · Pine Forest and 6th Mile
The shooting point everybody photographs, and the one place on this route with room to walk about. 9th Mile is a few minutes further if you want the longer version.
15:30 · Kamaraj Sagar Dam on the way back
A short, quiet stop that costs nothing and is usually empty, then back into town by about 17:00.
Route 3 — Coonoor, about 55 km
09:00 · Down the 14 bends
19 km and 45 to 60 minutes to Coonoor, which sits roughly 400 m lower and a few degrees warmer than Ooty. Ketti Valley View is a ten-minute stop on the way down.
10:00 · Sim's Park
Twelve hectares on a hillside with several hundred species, entry ₹30 to ₹50. It is the most rewarding garden in the Nilgiris and the least crowded of the three.
12:00 · Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose
Both are cloud-dependent. On a clear day Dolphin's Nose looks across to Catherine Falls; on a misty one we say so before driving out rather than after.
14:30 · A working tea estate
Half an hour among the bushes and inside a factory. This is the stop guests remember from Coonoor, and it is the one most day plans leave out.
16:00 · Back up, or the train
If you have booked the 16:00 from Coonoor you take the train back and the driver brings the car up. Otherwise it is 19 km and an hour.
Route 4 — Avalanche and Emerald, and its hard rules
08:00 · Leave early. This is not negotiable
Avalanche is 22 to 25 km and an hour and a quarter out, inside a reserved forest with a daily capacity. Tickets are sold only at the check-post on the day and in season the queue at 10:00 is one to two hours. Arrive by 09:00.
09:00 · At the forest check-post
About ₹40 per person forest entry and roughly ₹50 for the vehicle, in cash. Then either a shared forest jeep at about ₹250 a head or a private jeep for up to eight at around ₹2,000. There is no online booking of any kind.
09:30 · Into the reserve
Private vehicles stop at the parking area — you cannot drive your own car in. The jeep runs to the lake and the Upper Bhavani side, and the gate hours are roughly 09:00 to 15:00, so a late start loses the day entirely.
13:00 · Emerald Lake on the way back
17 to 25 km from town, free, no permit, and viewable from the public road. It is the quiet counterweight to a morning of permits and queues.
16:00 · Back in Ooty
This is a long day and it should be the only thing on it. Any itinerary that adds Doddabetta to an Avalanche day has not driven it.
Route 5 — Mudumalai and Masinagudi
07:30 · Down the Sigur ghat
37 to 40 km to Theppakadu, an hour and a quarter, on a road with 36 hairpin bends that drops about 1,400 m. Not a route for a coach, and not one to do twice in a day if anyone in the car gets carsick.
09:00 · Theppakadu elephant camp
The most reliable wildlife encounter in the district and the one children remember. Forest department safari timings are early morning and late afternoon; we take the morning slot.
11:30 · Masinagudi and the buffer zone
The drive through the buffer area is where most sightings happen — spotted deer, langur, gaur if you are lucky. Elephants cross this road regularly, which is exactly why the night ban exists.
14:00 · Back up before dark
We climb in the afternoon so the 36 bends are done in daylight. If you want the evening safari instead, sleep in Masinagudi — the forest roads close to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00.
Combining routes over two and three days
Held-vehicle rates for travellers who want a car for several consecutive days rather than one-off outings. These are sedan figures; other classes scale from the day rates above.
| Duration | Sedan | What it typically covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 days | ₹4,400 | Routes 1 and 3 — the town and Coonoor |
| 3 days | ₹6,600 | Routes 1, 3 and 2 — adds Pykara |
| 4 days | ₹9,800 | Adds Avalanche or Mudumalai |
| 5 days | ₹13,000 | All five routes, at an unhurried pace |
Why a five-stop day works and a nine-stop day does not
Every route above has four or five stops, and that is deliberate. The Nilgiris road network averages 25 to 35 km/h: Doddabetta is 9 to 11 km away and takes 45 minutes each way because the last stretch is single lane at 2,600 m, and Coonoor is 19 km that takes an hour because of the bends. A day with nine names on it gives each of them about twenty minutes, of which five are spent parking.
The other thing that breaks itineraries is the gates. Avalanche runs roughly 09:00 to 15:00 with spot-only tickets. The boat house closes at 18:00. Gardens shut at 18:00. Mudumalai's safari slots are early and late, and the forest road closes at 21:00. A day plan is a negotiation with those hours, not a list, and the reason we publish route distances and stop timings is so you can see which negotiation you are making.
Questions we answer daily
How much is a full day sightseeing cab in Ooty?
₹2,000 to ₹2,500 for a sedan on the town route, ₹3,300 to ₹3,800 for an Innova and ₹5,500 to ₹6,500 for a 12 to 14 seat tempo traveller, for 8 hours and 80 km including fuel, driver, parking and 5% GST. The Avalanche and Mudumalai routes are longer days and start at ₹3,200 in a sedan.
Which Ooty sightseeing route is best for one day?
Route 1, the town circuit — Botanical Garden, Doddabetta, the tea museum, Rose Garden and the lake, about 45 km over 8 hours. If you have seen the town before, Route 3 to Coonoor is the better single day, because Sim's Park and the tea estates are what most people actually came for.
Can I combine Ooty town and Coonoor in one day?
You can drive it, but you will get about half of each. Coonoor alone is 19 km down and back with three or four stops. We would rather sell you two days at ₹4,400 in a sedan than one day that leaves you standing at Dolphin's Nose at 17:30 wondering where the afternoon went.
Do I need to book Avalanche tickets in advance?
You cannot. Avalanche tickets are sold only at the forest check-post on the day, first come first served: about ₹40 per person entry, ₹50 for the vehicle, and a shared jeep at roughly ₹250 a head or a private one for up to eight at about ₹2,000. Arrive by 09:00 or expect a one to two hour wait in season.
Is the driver a guide as well?
Our drivers know the routes, the timings and which viewpoint is worth stopping at in today's weather, and they will tell you. They are not licensed guides and will not deliver a commentary in the Botanical Garden. If you want a guided day, say so when booking and we will arrange one separately.
What is the extra-hour charge if we run late?
₹150 for a sedan, ₹250 for an SUV, ₹300 for an Innova, ₹350 for a Crysta and ₹500 for a tempo traveller. We tell you the rate before you set off, and the driver will warn you when you are approaching the eighth hour rather than presenting it afterwards.
Can a cab take us to Mudumalai for an evening safari?
It can take you, but you should not plan to come back the same night. The forest roads through Mudumalai close to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00, and the climb back up the Sigur ghat's 36 bends in the dark is not something we recommend. Stay in Masinagudi for the evening slot.
Are entry fees included in the cab price?
No. Entry is charged at each gate — Botanical Garden ₹50, Rose Garden ₹40, Doddabetta ₹10 with ₹30 parking, Sim's Park ₹30 to ₹50, boating ₹200 to ₹500 per boat — and forest permits at Avalanche are separate again. Carry ₹500 to ₹800 per adult in cash for a full day.
