Ooty Travel Guide — Distances, Entry Fees, Drive Times and the Rules Nobody Tells You
Everything we tell guests on the phone, written down: how far things really are once you factor in the gradient, what each gate charges, which road your driver should take, and the four regulations that can end a trip before it starts.
In short
Ooty sits at 2,240 m in the Nilgiris, 88 km and 2h30m from Coimbatore, its nearest airport and railhead. Coonoor is 19 km away, Doddabetta 9–11 km, Pykara 21 km and Mudumalai 37–40 km. Entry fees run from ₹10 at Doddabetta to ₹50 at the Botanical Garden, and a free Nilgiris e-pass is required to drive in.

Ooty in sixty seconds
Udhagamandalam, still called Ooty by everyone including the signboards, is the district headquarters of the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu and the highest-volume hill station in South India. It sits at 2,240 m, which is why it is fifteen degrees cooler than Coimbatore on the same afternoon, and it is surrounded by tea. Coonoor, 19 km below it at about 1,850 m, is the second town; Kotagiri, 29 km east, is the quietest of the three.
The single fact that shapes every Ooty trip is that there is no airport and no mainline railway station in the Nilgiris. The nearest airport is Coimbatore, 88 to 90 km and two and a half hours away; the nearest mainline railhead is Coimbatore Junction at about 87 km, or Mettupalayam at 46 km if you are taking the toy train up. Every single visitor arrives by road for at least the last stretch, which is why the Ooty travel market is built around vehicles rather than hotels, and why entry to the district is regulated by a vehicle pass rather than a ticket.
Distances and honest drive times from Ooty
Measured from Charing Cross in Ooty town. The times are what our drivers actually take, not what a map estimate promises, because hill roads average 25 to 35 km/h and the maps assume otherwise.
| Place | Distance | Drive time | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government Botanical Garden | 2 km | 15 min | 55 acres, the Flower Show site |
| Doddabetta Peak | 9–11 km | 30–45 min | 2,637 m, the highest point in the Nilgiris |
| Emerald Lake | 17–25 km | 50–70 min | Free, viewable from the public road |
| Coonoor | 19 km | 45–60 min | Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose, tea estates |
| Pykara Lake and Falls | 21 km | 55 min | Falls, boating, the pine forest at 6th Mile |
| Avalanche Lake | 22–25 km | 1 h 15 | Forest reserve, spot-ticket jeeps only |
| Kotagiri | 29 km | 1 h 15 | The quiet third town, 4-bend ghat |
| Mudumalai (Theppakadu) | 37–40 km | 1 h 15 | Tiger reserve and elephant camp |
| Mettupalayam | 46 km | 1 h 30 | Toy train terminus, foot of the ghat |
| Coimbatore / CJB airport | 88–90 km | 2 h 30 | The gateway for almost every visitor |
| Mysore | 125 km | 3–3 h 30 | Through the forest gate — see the night ban |
| Bangalore | 265–275 km | 5–6 h | The biggest outbound market in the South |

The five ways up, and how a driver chooses
Coonoor ghat, NH181 from Mettupalayam, is the road nine out of ten visitors use: 14 hairpin bends, wide enough for coaches, and the route past Kallar check-post and the tea slopes at Burliar. Its weakness is rain — it is the most landslide-prone of the five, and closures for clearance happen most monsoons.
Kotagiri ghat, SH15, is the oldest road into the hills and by far the gentlest, with only 4 bends across 33 km from Mettupalayam. We use it for guests who suffer motion sickness, for some older travellers, and whenever NH181 is closed. It is longer to Ooty town but it is a much kinder drive.
Sigur ghat, SH67, is the Masinagudi shortcut on the Mysore side: 36 hairpin bends, steep enough that it saves 30 km and costs you the same time, unsuitable for coaches and nervous drivers, and shut at night with the forest gate. Manjur ghat from Karamadai has 48 bends and exists as a wet-weather backup rather than a choice. And the Gudalur ghat, which comes up through Mudumalai, is the longest, the most scenic and the route buses and trucks take from Mysore.
There is also the Kalhatty ghat, which has been reported closed to tourist vehicles in 2026. We check its status before routing anything that way rather than relying on a map that does not know.
Coonoor, Kotagiri and the tea country
Coonoor is 19 km and 45 to 60 minutes below Ooty, and it is the reason many people say Ooty was better than they expected — the tea slopes photographed on every Nilgiris brochure are largely here. Sim's Park is a 12-hectare botanical garden on a slope rather than a lawn; Dolphin's Nose looks across to Catherine Falls and is completely useless in cloud; Lamb's Rock is the one to do early before the haze builds. Ketti Valley View sits on the road between the two towns, which makes it an efficient last stop on the way back up.
Kotagiri, 29 km from Ooty at the head of the 4-bend ghat, is where you go if the point of the trip is quiet. It has fewer attractions in the ticketed sense and more of what people actually came for: estates, walks and a town that is not organised around visitors. For a three-night trip it is a good half day; for a two-night trip it is the thing you sacrifice.
Pykara, Avalanche and the permit rules that catch people out
Pykara is 21 km and 55 minutes from Ooty on the Mysore road: a dam, a lake with boating, a waterfall that is worth the short walk, and the pine forest and shooting points at 6th and 9th Mile on the way. Entry is about ₹50 and it is a straightforward half day — the only planning needed is to go in the morning, because the light on the lake goes flat by mid-afternoon.
Avalanche is different and needs to be treated as an expedition rather than a stop. It is 22 to 25 km out and an hour and a quarter each way, inside a reserved forest with a hard daily capacity. Tickets are sold only at the check-post on the day: about ₹40 per person forest entry, roughly ₹50 for the vehicle, and then either a shared forest jeep at about ₹250 a head or a private jeep for up to eight at around ₹2,000. There is no online booking of any kind, private vehicles cannot proceed past the parking area, and in season the queue at 10 am is one to two hours. Arrive by 09:00. Guests who ignore that single sentence are the ones who come back having seen a car park.
Mudumalai, Masinagudi and the forest gate
Theppakadu in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is 37 to 40 km from Ooty, an hour and a quarter down the Sigur side, and the elephant camp there is the most reliably rewarding thing in the district for children. Forest department safaris run in the early morning and the late afternoon, which is the whole problem with treating Mudumalai as a day trip: to catch either slot and still climb 1,400 m back to Ooty, you are driving in the dark at one end.
The gate closes. The Bandipur and Mudumalai forest roads are shut to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00 every night under a Karnataka High Court order dating from 2010, and two-wheelers are restricted from around 18:00 on the Bandipur stretch. There is no practical night alternative between Ooty and Mysore — both the 124 km Masinagudi route and the 158 km Gudalur route pass the same gates at Theppakadu. If you are driving to Mysore or Bangalore, leave Ooty by 5 pm. If you want an evening safari, sleep on that side.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway at a glance
The toy train is a UNESCO World Heritage line and the best two hours in the district. These are the Ooty departures and the reality of booking them.

Four rules that can stop your trip
Before you set off
- Nilgiris e-pass: free at epass.tnega.org, needed for non-TN-43 vehicles, capped at 6,000 weekday and 8,000 weekend vehicles
- Green tax: ₹150–200 a car, ₹200–300 an SUV, ₹300–500 a minibus, cash at the check-post
- Bandipur and Mudumalai night ban: no cars or buses 21:00–06:00, in force since 2010
- Plastic ban: enforced across the Nilgiris; carry a refillable bottle rather than buying one
Pack for 2,240 metres
- A real jacket between November and February, when nights reach 5–8°C
- Rain shell from June to October, not an umbrella — it is windy on the viewpoints
- Shoes with grip for wet stone at Pykara and the Avalanche path
- Cash for gates, parking and forest jeeps; almost everything else takes UPI
- Any prescription medicines — Ooty has pharmacies, Avalanche and Masinagudi do not
Questions we answer daily
What is the nearest airport to Ooty?
Coimbatore International (CJB), 88 to 90 km away and about two and a half hours by road via Mettupalayam and the Coonoor ghat. There is no airport in the Nilgiris and no plan for one, which is why almost every Ooty itinerary starts with a car at CJB or at Coimbatore Junction, 87 km out.
How far is Coonoor from Ooty?
19 km, which takes 45 to 60 minutes because the road runs down 14 hairpin bends. The alternative is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which covers the same descent in about 55 minutes for ₹140 to ₹295 in second class and is considerably more enjoyable than the road.
What is the entry fee for Ooty Botanical Garden?
₹50 per adult, with a further ₹50 if you carry a camera, open 09:00 to 18:00. The Rose Garden nearby is ₹40 with the same camera charge. Both are revised most years just before the April season, so confirm on the day rather than relying on a figure printed months earlier.
Do I need a permit for Avalanche Lake?
Yes, and it is sold only at the forest check-post on the day: roughly ₹40 per person for forest entry, about ₹50 for the vehicle, and either a shared jeep at around ₹250 a head or a private jeep for up to eight at about ₹2,000. There is no online booking and private vehicles cannot go past the parking area.
Which is the best road to Ooty?
The Coonoor ghat on NH181 for almost everyone: 14 hairpin bends, wide enough for coaches and the shortest route from Coimbatore. If anyone in the car gets motion sick, ask for the Kotagiri ghat instead, which has only 4 bends across 33 km from Mettupalayam and is a far gentler climb.
Can I drive from Ooty to Mysore at night?
No. The forest roads through Bandipur and Mudumalai are closed to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00, and both the 124 km Masinagudi route and the 158 km Gudalur route pass the same gates. There is no practical night alternative, so leave Ooty by 5 pm or stay the night.
How many days do you need to see Ooty properly?
Two nights covers Ooty town and Coonoor with 8 to 10 hours of driving inside the hills. Three nights adds Pykara and Avalanche, four adds Mudumalai. One night works only from Coimbatore and limits you to the town circuit.
Is Ooty walkable?
The town centre is — Charing Cross, the market, the lake and the Botanical Garden 2 km away are all walkable, though it is a hilly walk at 2,240 m and you will feel it. Everything else in this guide, from Doddabetta at 9 to 11 km to Pykara at 21 km, needs a vehicle.
What is the plastic rule in the Nilgiris?
Single-use plastic is banned across the district and enforcement is genuine, including at check-posts and forest gates. Carry a refillable bottle and a cloth bag. Scope and enforcement have changed more than once, so we re-check this alongside the other district rules each month.
