Why we push the train, even though it makes our fare smaller
We are a Coimbatore operator, so the drive from Chennai is not our vehicle and not our revenue. That makes this advice easy to give honestly: put yourselves on an overnight train to Coimbatore — the Nilgiri Express and the other Chennai services all serve this corridor — and let the 535 km happen while you sleep. You arrive rested at a station 88 km from Ooty with a driver already waiting, and you start the hill drive at 06:30 instead of after nine hours of highway.
There is a second, less obvious benefit. Travellers who arrive in the Nilgiris by train or by government bus are exempt from the e-pass entirely, under the High Court relaxation. If you then hire a vehicle from us, the pass requirement attaches to that vehicle and we file it — one fewer thing on your list, and no risk that a cap-full weekend blocks a car you drove 535 km.
Flying works too and is the right answer for a short trip: Coimbatore is a 70-minute flight, and a morning arrival puts you in Ooty by lunchtime with the whole afternoon usable. The only version we would argue against is driving 535 km to then drive another 88 km up 14 hairpin bends on the same day.

How a rail-in trip runs
Night before · board in Chennai
An overnight service to Coimbatore Junction. Book the berth yourself on IRCTC — rail tickets must be in the traveller's own name — and send us the arrival time when you confirm the tour.
Morning · the driver is on Platform 1
Name board, vehicle number and driver photo sent to you the previous evening. Breakfast in Coimbatore or at Mettupalayam, 46 km along the route, rather than on the platform.
Then · up the ghat, 88 km
Two and a half hours through Mettupalayam and Kallar, where the green tax is collected in cash, and up the 14 hairpin bends of the Coonoor ghat. In Ooty by about 10:30, which means day one is a full day, not a travel day.
Optional · take the toy train instead of the road
We drop you at Mettupalayam for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and meet you at Coonoor or Ooty with the luggage. Second class is ₹140 to ₹295 and the IRCTC window opens 60 days ahead.
On the way home · back to the station
Ooty to Coimbatore Junction is the same 2 hours 30 minutes. For an evening train we leave Ooty after lunch; for a morning flight from CJB we leave at 6 am and you sleep in the car.

Is there a direct train from Chennai to Ooty?
No. Ooty's only railway is the narrow-gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam, so no mainline train reaches it. Chennai services run to Coimbatore Junction, and the Nilgiri Express serves the Mettupalayam corridor for onward toy train connections.
Do I need an e-pass if I come from Chennai by train?
Not as a traveller — rail arrivals are exempt. If you then hire a vehicle in Coimbatore, that vehicle needs the free pass and we file it against its registration number. Only TN-43 Nilgiris-registered vehicles are exempt outright.
How many days should a Chennai trip to Ooty be?
Three nights is right, four if you add Kodaikanal. With an overnight train each way it becomes a four-day trip from Chennai with three full days in the hills, which is a much better use of leave than driving 1,070 km in total.
Can we hire a bus in Chennai to go to Ooty?
