Coimbatore Airport to Ooty Taxi — a Driver at Arrivals, Flight Tracked, 88 km Up the Hill

Almost nobody flies into Ooty, because there is no runway within 88 km of it. You land at Coimbatore, CJB, and the hill starts from there. This page is about the transfer that bridges the gap — who meets you, where, and what it costs.

In short

Coimbatore airport (CJB) to Ooty is 88 km and 2 hours 30 minutes by the Mettupalayam and Coonoor ghat road. A flight-tracked transfer is ₹2,500 in a sedan and ₹4,200 in an Innova, all-in with fuel, driver, tolls and 5% GST, the driver waiting at arrivals and the free e-pass filed for you.

CJB to Ooty transfer fares, by vehicle

The airport sits on the Ooty side of Coimbatore, so a pickup from CJB costs the same as a pickup from the city — not more. Every figure includes the vehicle, fuel, the driver, tolls and 5% GST. Green tax and hotel are separate and named lower down.

What you pay depends on the season, the vehicle and arrival time — April to June, long weekends and the Flower Show run at the top of every band, and night arrivals add a hold charge.

What a flight-tracked pickup actually involves

Send the flight number, not just the time

When you book, we take the flight number rather than a clock time. The driver then leaves our Ramanathapuram yard timed to the live landing, so if your flight runs 50 minutes late the pickup shifts by 50 minutes and no waiting charge appears on the bill. CJB is a five-minute run from our side of the city, which is why we can hold the car close instead of parking it overnight at the terminal.

One arrivals exit, one board

CJB is a single-terminal airport with one arrivals gate, which makes meeting simple. The driver stands just past the pre-paid taxi counter holding a printed board with your name. The evening before you travel you get his name, photo and the vehicle number on WhatsApp, so at 6 am you are looking for a face you already recognise rather than a stranger.

Early flights are the normal case, not the exception

A large share of the flights that make sense for an Ooty trip land before 8 am — the Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai morning sectors all arrive early. Because the driver sleeps about 20 minutes from the airport, a 5:40 am pickup is routine and does not need a car sent down the ghat from Ooty at 3 am. Arrivals between 11 pm and 5 am carry a ₹300 night hold charge, and we quote it before you book rather than after you land.

Luggage, child seats and the first stop

Sedans take two large cases and two cabin bags comfortably; four adults with full luggage want the Ertiga or Innova, and we say so when you book rather than squeezing you in. Child seats are free on request if you tell us the ages. Most Ooty hotels will not check you in before noon, so a dawn landing leaves idle hours — we build the first morning around that with a tea-factory stop at Burliar rather than sending you to sit in a lobby.

The road from the terminal to Charing Cross

The transfer is one road, NH181, and it divides cleanly into two halves. The first 46 km from the airport to Mettupalayam is flat plains running that takes about an hour and sets no one's nerves on edge. Everything that makes the drive memorable happens after Mettupalayam, where the Kallar check-post marks the foot of the climb and the Coonoor ghat begins its 14 hairpin bends, lifting you from 411 m at Coimbatore to 2,240 m at Ooty in the last 42 km. Expect the full run to take 2 hours 30 minutes in ordinary weather and up to 3 hours in the April to June rush or in monsoon rain.

Landing is the easiest time to meet this road, because you are rested and the car is fresh, but it is also the worst time to be carsick on an empty stomach. If anyone in the group is prone to motion sickness, tell us and the driver takes the Kotagiri ghat instead — 4 bends rather than 14, a little longer, and far kinder on a stomach that has just been on a plane. For wheelchair users and older travellers the same Kotagiri routing is the one we default to.

The return: leaving Ooty for a CJB departure

The transfer home is where people miscalculate, because they time it from the airport instead of from the gate. Work backwards.

Allow three hours, Ooty hotel to CJB

  • 2 hours 30 minutes of driving plus standing time at the Kallar post and the Mettupalayam crossing
  • The level crossing at Mettupalayam can hold traffic 8 to 10 minutes when the toy train is running
  • For a 10 am flight we leave Ooty at 6 am; for the 6 am departures we leave at about 2:30 am
  • CJB is a compact airport — 90 minutes before a domestic flight is plenty once you are there

Booked as a pair, not two strangers

  • Book arrival and departure together and the same operator holds both ends of the trip
  • A return-only drop to CJB is the same ₹2,500 sedan and ₹4,200 Innova fare as the inbound leg
  • We confirm the pickup time the night before against your actual departure, not a guess
  • A pre-dawn departure means the car is at your hotel door, so you sleep until the last minute

Landing for the toy train instead

Some travellers fly into CJB specifically to ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway up. We handle that as a split transfer: the car takes you the 46 km from the airport to Mettupalayam station in time for the morning rack-section departure, the same driver carries your luggage up by road, and you are reunited at Coonoor or Ooty station. Second class tickets are ₹140 to ₹295, the carriage view is identical to First Class, and booking opens on IRCTC 60 days before travel — so if your flights are fixed, book the train the day the window opens.

Is the private cab worth it over the bus?

Honestly, not always. Government and private buses run Coimbatore to Ooty for under ₹100 a head, and for a solo traveller on a tight budget that is a real saving. The catch is the logistics: from CJB you first have to reach the Central bus stand across the city, then most services make you change at Mettupalayam for the hill leg, and doing all that with two suitcases eats the better part of a morning. For two or more people travelling together, a shared sedan at ₹2,500 usually works out cheaper per head than two bus tickets plus two airport autos, and it is around three hours faster door to door. We will tell you honestly which one suits your group when you message — a single backpacker often should take the bus, and we would rather say so.

Questions we answer daily

How much is a taxi from Coimbatore airport to Ooty?

₹2,500 one way in a sedan, ₹3,400 in an SUV, ₹4,200 in an Innova and ₹7,500 in a 14-seat tempo traveller, all-in with fuel, driver, tolls and 5% GST. CJB sits on the Ooty side of the city, so the airport fare is the same as the Coimbatore city fare rather than higher.

How long is the drive from CJB airport to Ooty?

88 to 90 km and about 2 hours 30 minutes. The first 46 km to Mettupalayam is flat; the last 42 km climbs the Coonoor ghat's 14 hairpin bends from 411 m to 2,240 m. Allow 3 hours in the April to June season or in monsoon rain.

Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?

Yes. We take your flight number at booking and track the landing, so a delay moves the pickup rather than running up a waiting charge. Up to 60 minutes of waiting after landing is included; beyond that it is ₹150 an hour for a sedan, and we message you if your bags are slow.

Can you pick up a flight that lands at 5 am?

Yes. Many flights worth taking for Ooty land before 8 am, and our driver lives about 20 minutes from CJB, so a dawn pickup does not need a car dispatched from Ooty at 3 am. Arrivals between 11 pm and 5 am carry a ₹300 night hold charge, quoted before you book.

Do I need a Nilgiris e-pass for an airport taxi to Ooty?

Our Coimbatore-registered cabs need one, since only TN-43 Nilgiris plates are exempt. We file the free pass at epass.tnega.org using your dates, passenger count and hotel address before the trip. You carry your ID and hotel booking to show at the Kallar check-post, where green tax of ₹150 to ₹300 is paid in cash.

What time should the taxi leave Ooty for my return flight from CJB?

Work back from the flight, not the airport. Allow 3 hours from an Ooty hotel to CJB — 2h30m of driving plus standing time at Kallar and the Mettupalayam crossing. For a 10 am departure we leave Ooty at 6 am; for the 6 am flights we leave at about 2:30 am.

Can you connect my flight to the Nilgiri toy train?

Yes. We drop you at Mettupalayam station, 46 km from CJB, for the morning rack-section departure, and the same driver meets you at Coonoor or Ooty with your luggage. Second class tickets are ₹140 to ₹295 and open on IRCTC 60 days before travel.

Is there a cheaper way than a private cab from the airport?

Buses run Coimbatore to Ooty for under ₹100, but you must first reach the Central bus stand from CJB and then change at Mettupalayam, which eats most of a morning with luggage. For two or more travellers a shared sedan at ₹2,500 usually works out cheaper per head and three hours faster.
