Tempo Traveller in Ooty — the Right Vehicle for 8 to 14 People, With Rates and the Ghat Rules
When a group of eight or more wants to stay together rather than split across two cars, the tempo traveller is the answer in the hills. The catch nobody mentions is that the biggest vehicle is not always the one allowed up your road.
In short
A 12 to 14 seat tempo traveller in Ooty costs ₹5,500 to ₹6,500 for a full sightseeing day of 8 hours and about 80 km, all-in. From Coimbatore it is ₹7,500 one way and ₹14,017 for a 1N/2D tour; outstation it is ₹32 a kilometre. It cannot take the Sigur ghat, so groups use the Coonoor or Gudalur roads.

Who a tempo traveller is right for
The groups it suits
- Extended families of 8 to 14 who want to travel as one group, not convoy in two cars
- Friends' trips where splitting the ₹5,500 day rate across 12 beats two SUVs on cost per head
- Small college or corporate groups of up to 14, with luggage space for a two-night trip
- Senior groups who want one step up into a single vehicle rather than climbing into cars
When it is the wrong choice
- Four to six people — an Ertiga or Innova is cheaper and nimbler on the single-lane approach roads
- 30 to 55 pax — pair two tempo travellers or move to a 20-seat coach at ₹9,800 one way
- Any plan that needs the Sigur ghat — a 14-seater is not permitted on those 36 bends
- Tight Doddabetta and Dolphin's Nose approaches, where we often switch groups to smaller cars
Which ghat a tempo traveller can actually take
This is the detail that trips up groups who book the vehicle before checking the road. A tempo traveller climbs to Ooty on the Coonoor ghat, NH181, the same route coaches and trucks use — 14 hairpin bends from Mettupalayam, and the only ghat we put a 14-seater on from the Coimbatore side. From Mysore or Bangalore, a group takes the Gudalur road, about 158 km, which buses are permitted on, rather than the shorter Sigur ghat.
The Sigur ghat's 36 hairpin bends on the Masinagudi side are for cars only, and we never send a tempo traveller or a coach up them — they are too steep and too tight for a long-wheelbase vehicle, and the law agrees. So if your plan involves Masinagudi or the direct Mysore road, the group either takes the longer Gudalur climb or switches to cars for that leg. We tell you which road the driver is taking before you leave, not when you are already on it and wondering why the minibus is going the long way round.
AC or non-AC, 12-seat or 14, standard or Urbania
AC earns its keep on the plains, not on top
Above 1,800 m, Ooty sits at 10 to 20°C by day and the air conditioning stays off — you want the windows down for the tea-estate air. Where AC matters is the warm plains leg up to Mettupalayam and the Bandipur stretch, so we quote AC and non-AC both and let the group decide. A non-AC 20-seat coach is the cheapest group option at ₹9,800 one way.
12-seat versus 14-seat
A 14-seater seats fourteen on paper but is most comfortable for ten to twelve adults with luggage for a multi-day trip; a 9-seat version exists for smaller groups who still want the single-vehicle feel. We size the vehicle to your headcount plus bags rather than to the sticker on the door.
The luxury Urbania option
A 12-seat Force Urbania with reclining seats, more legroom and a proper luggage bay runs about ₹8,200 for a local day and ₹42 a kilometre outstation against the standard ₹32. It is the one corporate groups and comfort-minded families ask for, and on the 14 bends of the Coonoor ghat the extra suspension travel is genuinely noticeable.
The driver is a hill driver
Our tempo-traveller drivers run the Coonoor ghat weekly and know how to engine-brake a loaded 14-seater down a 1-in-12 gradient rather than cooking the brakes, which is a different job from driving a minibus on the plains. For a group trusting one vehicle with everyone in it, that is the part of the price that matters most.
What a group pays beyond the day rate
Three charges sit outside the fare and cause the arguments, so we name them up front. Green tax for a minibus is ₹300 to ₹500, collected in cash at the Nilgiris check-post by municipal staff — it is not in any operator's quote, ours included, and the leader of the group should carry it. The extra-hour charge, if the day runs past eight hours, is ₹500 an hour for a tempo traveller, and the driver warns you as you approach the eighth hour rather than presenting it afterwards. A night hold, if the vehicle stays out past 10 pm, is ₹250 to ₹500. Entry fees at each attraction — Botanical Garden ₹50 a head, Doddabetta ₹10 with ₹30 parking, Sim's Park ₹30 to ₹50 — are per person and add up fast across a group of twelve, so budget ₹500 to ₹800 per adult in cash for a full sightseeing day.
Questions we answer daily
How much is a tempo traveller for a day in Ooty?
₹5,500 to ₹6,500 for a 12 to 14 seat tempo traveller on the Ooty town route, 8 hours and about 80 km, including fuel, driver, parking and 5% GST. The Pykara and Coonoor routes are ₹5,800 to ₹6,800, and the longer Avalanche and Mudumalai days are ₹6,800 to ₹7,800.
What is the tempo traveller fare from Coimbatore to Ooty?
₹7,500 one way for a 14-seat tempo traveller, ₹12,800 for a same-day return, and ₹14,017 for a 1 night 2 day Ooty tour including 5% GST. A 2 nights 3 days tour with the vehicle held throughout is about ₹20,400. All are all-in with fuel, driver and tolls.
How many people fit in a tempo traveller?
The standard Ooty tempo traveller seats 12 to 14, and there are 9-seat versions for smaller groups. For a family or friends' group of 8 to 14 it is cheaper per head than two SUVs and keeps everyone together. Above 14, a 20-seat minibus is the next step up at ₹9,800 one way from Coimbatore.
Can a tempo traveller take the Sigur ghat to Ooty?
No. The Sigur ghat's 36 hairpin bends on the Mysore side are for cars only, and we never send a tempo traveller or coach up them. Groups travel the Coonoor ghat on NH181 from Coimbatore, or the Gudalur road from Mysore and Bangalore, both of which buses are permitted on.
Is the tempo traveller AC, and is it worth it in Ooty?
We run both AC and non-AC 12 to 14 seaters. In Ooty the AC is rarely needed above 1,800 m, where it is 10 to 20°C, but it matters on the warm plains legs up to Mettupalayam and on the Bandipur stretch. A non-AC minibus is cheaper; a 20-seat non-AC coach is ₹9,800 one way from Coimbatore.
What is the luxury tempo traveller option in Ooty?
A 12-seat Force Urbania with reclining seats and more luggage room, at about ₹8,200 for a local sightseeing day and ₹42 a km on outstation routes against the standard tempo traveller's ₹32. It suits corporate groups and families who want the extra comfort on the 14 bends.
What does a tempo traveller cost per kilometre for outstation trips?
₹32 a kilometre for a standard tempo traveller and ₹42 for the luxury Urbania, with a 250 km daily minimum and driver bata of ₹400 to ₹600 a night. Green tax of ₹300 to ₹500 for a minibus is collected in cash at the Nilgiris check-post and is not in the per-km figure.
What is the extra-hour charge on a tempo traveller in Ooty?
₹500 an hour beyond the 8-hour day, and we tell you the rate before you set off. A night hold, if the vehicle stays out past 10 pm, is ₹250 to ₹500. The driver warns you as you approach the eighth hour rather than presenting the charge afterwards.
Is a tempo traveller good for a school or corporate group in Ooty?
For 12 to 14 it is ideal; for 30 to 55, we pair tempo travellers or move to a 20-seat coach at ₹9,800 one way from Coimbatore. Inside Ooty we often switch larger groups to smaller vehicles for Doddabetta and Dolphin's Nose, where the approach roads are single lane.
