Coonoor is nineteen kilometres and four hundred metres below Ooty, and it is where most of the photographs people bring home were actually taken. This is the trip for travellers who would rather see estates than gardens.

Should you stay in Ooty or in Coonoor?
Most visitors stay in Ooty and day-trip to Coonoor, and for a first visit that is right: Ooty town has the gardens, the lake, the market and the shorter drives to Doddabetta and Pykara. Coonoor is the better base on a second visit, or for anyone whose idea of a hill station is a quiet estate rather than a busy town.
The practical differences are worth knowing. Coonoor sits about 400 m lower, which means it is two to three degrees warmer and noticeably less cold at night — a real consideration in December and January when Ooty drops to 6 to 8°C. It is 19 km closer to the plains, so the drive up from Coimbatore is about half an hour shorter. And it is much quieter in April and May, when Ooty is at its busiest. What you give up is walkability to the main sights and the easy evening in town.
The Coonoor day, properly ordered
09:00 · Down the bends, with a stop
19 km, 45 to 60 minutes, and Ketti Valley View sits on the way — ten minutes, free, and the best wide view of the valley you will get without walking.
10:00 · Sim's Park
Twelve hectares of hillside botanical garden with several hundred species, ₹30 to ₹50, and consistently the least crowded good garden in the Nilgiris. Ninety minutes.
12:00 · Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose
Free viewpoints on the same road out of town, with Catherine Falls visible across the valley from Dolphin's Nose on a clear day. Both are useless in cloud, which in June to September is most afternoons — we check before driving out.
14:00 · Lunch where the drivers eat
Coonoor's town restaurants are half the price of the viewpoint stalls and considerably better. This is also the point at which most day plans should stop adding stops.
15:00 · A working tea estate
Half an hour among the bushes and inside a factory, which is the thing guests talk about afterwards and the thing most itineraries omit. Best light of the day for photographs of the slopes.
16:00 · The train back, if you booked it
The 16:00 from Coonoor reaches Ooty at 17:15 while the driver brings the car up. Otherwise it is 19 km and an hour back up the bends.
The toy train belongs to this trip more than any other
The Ooty to Coonoor section of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is 19 km of adhesion track through tea country, and it is the single best hour available to a visitor here. Trains leave Ooty at 09:26, 12:26 and 17:41, arriving Coonoor 55 minutes later, and come back up at 10:40, 13:30 and 16:00. Second class is ₹140 to ₹295, and the IRCTC booking window opens 60 days ahead.
On an Ooty and Coonoor trip, the sensible arrangement is to ride one direction and drive the other, because a return trip by rail locks up most of the day and leaves you dependent on a single timetable. Ride down at 09:26 with the car following, or up at 16:00 after the estate visit. Do not pay ₹600 to ₹1,100 for first class — it is one carriage of 8 to 16 seats and the windows are the same windows.
Kotagiri, and the rest of the tea country
Worth adding on three nights
- Kotagiri, 29 km from Ooty at the head of the gentlest ghat — 4 bends over 33 km
- Catherine Falls, best seen from the Dolphin's Nose side
- A second estate; the first one teaches you enough to make the second interesting
- Coonoor market, for spices and eucalyptus oil at non-tourist prices
- The 16:00 train, which turns the return leg into part of the trip
Practical notes
- Coonoor at 1,850 m is 2 to 3°C warmer than Ooty — pack accordingly
- The 14 bends each way are the ones that cause motion sickness; sit forward
- Viewpoints here are weather-dependent, not time-dependent
- Coonoor traffic on the single main road is slow on weekend afternoons
- Entry fees here are small; carry ₹200 to ₹300 a head in cash

Can I do Ooty and Coonoor in one day?
You can drive both, but you will get half of each. Coonoor alone is 19 km down and back with four or five stops. If a single day is all you have, choose one: Ooty town if it is your first visit, Coonoor if you have been before.
Is the road from Ooty to Coonoor difficult?
It is 14 hairpin bends over 19 km on a good, busy road, and it is the same road all traffic from Coimbatore uses. It is not difficult for an experienced driver, but it is the stretch most likely to cause motion sickness — sit forward-facing and avoid reading.
