Ooty Tourist Places With Entry Fees, Timings and How Long Each One Takes
Most Ooty listicles tell you a place is beautiful. None of them tell you it is ₹50 to get in, ₹50 more if you carry a camera, and that ninety minutes is enough. This page does the second thing.

In town: the four you will definitely do
The Government Botanical Garden, 2 km from Charing Cross, is 55 acres laid out on a slope and it is the one attraction where the ₹50 is obviously worth it. Go at 09:00. By 11:30 in season the paths near the entrance are shoulder to shoulder and the far end, which is the good end, is still empty because most visitors never walk that far. The Flower Show in May turns this into the busiest place in the district.
The Rose Garden at ₹40 sits above the town with several thousand varieties and a view back across the roofs. Forty-five minutes. The tea factory and museum at ₹20 to ₹30 is a better use of the same forty minutes than either garden if you have never seen tea processed, and the tasting is usually thrown in. Ooty Lake is the evening stop: boating is ₹200 to ₹500 for the boat rather than per person, which makes it the cheapest hour of a family's trip, and the boat house closes at 18:00 sharp.
Doddabetta: ₹10, and the most mismanaged hour in Ooty
At 2,637 m Doddabetta is the highest point in the Nilgiris, the entry is ₹10 and the parking is ₹30 or so, and it is where more Ooty afternoons are wasted than anywhere else. The problem is the approach: a single-lane road, 9 to 11 km from town, taking 30 to 45 minutes when it is clear and considerably longer when it is not. From mid-morning in season, the queue starts on the road rather than at the gate.
Two rules make it work. Go at 08:30, which beats both the queue and the cloud that typically settles on the summit by late morning. And check the sky first: on a misty day the telescope platform looks out at a white wall, and there is no refund for weather. Our drivers will say so before driving you up, which occasionally disappoints people and always saves them an hour.
Out of town, and the free ones
Pykara, 21 km and 55 minutes out, charges about ₹50 for the falls with boating extra, and is best before noon. Sim's Park in Coonoor at ₹30 to ₹50 is the best garden in the district and the least crowded, because most visitors treat Coonoor as a viewpoint stop rather than a destination. Avalanche is the only place with a permit regime: roughly ₹40 a head forest entry, ₹50 for the vehicle, then a shared jeep at about ₹250 or a private one for up to eight at around ₹2,000, sold only at the check-post on the day.
The free list is longer than people expect and includes some of the best of it. Emerald Lake needs no permit and is viewable from the public road. Ketti Valley View, on the Ooty to Coonoor road, costs nothing but the ten minutes. Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose above Coonoor are free viewpoints where the only charge is parking. The pine forest and the shooting points at 6th and 9th Mile are free, and they are where children actually get to run about. St Stephen's Church, the Toda huts and the Cairn Hill reserve forest are all either free or nominal.
