Ooty Tour Packages from Mysore — the Short, Scenic 125 km Through Bandipur, and the Gate That Rules It

Mysore is the closest big city to Ooty with a real road between them, and the drive through Bandipur is the prettiest approach to the Nilgiris. It is also the one approach where a tiger reserve, not traffic, decides what time you can travel.

In short

Mysore to Ooty is 125 km and 3 to 3.5 hours through Bandipur, climbing the Sigur ghat's 36 hairpin bends. The Theppakadu forest gates close to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00, so cross in daylight. A 2N/3D Ooty and Coonoor package runs ₹9,000 to ₹14,000 per person mid-range.

Package bands and cab rates from Mysore

Package figures are per person on twin sharing, land only. Cab figures are outstation per-kilometre with a 250 km daily minimum, plus the driver's night bata — Mysore's short distance means the minimum, not the distance, usually sets the price.

The rule that decides your travel times

Both roads from Mysore to Ooty pass through the Bandipur and Mudumalai tiger reserves and share the same forest gates at Theppakadu, and those gates are closed to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00 under a Karnataka High Court order in force since 2010. The ban is there because elephants and gaur cross these roads after dark, and it is strictly enforced — no exceptions for tourists, no quiet word with the guard. There is no night alternative between Mysore and Ooty in either direction. If you leave Mysore after about 5:30 pm, you will not clear the gate, and you will spend the night in Gundlupet or Masinagudi rather than Ooty.

When to leave Ooty for the drive back to Mysore

Times from Ooty town down the Sigur ghat to the Theppakadu gates, then on to Mysore. The gate is the deadline; the rest is arithmetic.

Two roads from Mysore, and which one is yours

Direct via Bandipur and Masinagudi — about 125 km. This is the short, scenic road: Mysore to Gundlupet, through Bandipur tiger reserve to the Tamil Nadu border, then Mudumalai and Masinagudi before the Sigur ghat lifts you up the final 1,400 m into the Nilgiris on 36 hairpin bends. It is cars only. It is the route to take if you are in a sedan or an SUV, you are travelling in daylight, and nobody in the car is badly carsick. Your check-post is Masinagudi.

The longer road via Gudalur — about 158 km. If you are in a tempo traveller, a coach or anything that should not be threading 36 bends, this is the road the law puts you on anyway: buses and trucks are not permitted on the Sigur ghat. It is longer and the climb is spread out and gentler, and it is the sensible choice in monsoon when the Sigur bends are slick. Your check-post is Mel Gudalur. Both roads pass the same Theppakadu gates, so switching routes is not a way around the night ban — it only changes the bends, not the deadline.

A Mysore trip to Ooty that works

Day one · leave Mysore by late morning

A 10 or 11 am start from Mysore gets you across Bandipur with the reserve at its liveliest for sightings and into Ooty by mid-afternoon, well before the gate matters. Do not plan a dawn start hoping to beat it — the gate opens at 06:00 and the Bandipur morning light is worth being awake for, but there is no rush when the drive is only three hours.

Day one evening · settle in

Ooty at 2,240 m drops to 6 to 9°C after dark for much of the year, colder than Mysore ever gets, so the first thing most Mysore visitors notice is that they underpacked. Keep the evening to dinner and Charing Cross; the sightseeing starts tomorrow.

Day two · the full Ooty and Coonoor day

Doddabetta at 08:30 before the cloud at ₹10 entry, the Botanical Garden at ₹50, then down the 14 bends to Coonoor — Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose and a working tea estate, 19 km and about an hour each way. It is a full day and a good one.

Day three · Pykara or a safari, then home

Either Pykara at 21 km for the lake and falls, or a morning Mudumalai safari on your way down since it is already on the Mysore road. Theppakadu's elephant camp is the most reliable wildlife stop in the district and sits exactly where you are driving anyway.

Day three · leave by 17:00

The gate again. Leaving Ooty at 5 pm puts you through Theppakadu around 18:15 and in Mysore by about 19:45, with the Sigur bends done in daylight. Leaving at 7 pm means a night you did not plan for in Masinagudi.

Mysore-specific practicalities

Before you set off

  • File the free Nilgiris e-pass at epass.tnega.org against your registration — Karnataka plates need it
  • Your check-post is Masinagudi on the direct road, Mel Gudalur via Gudalur
  • Green tax of ₹150 to ₹300 is collected in cash at the post, separate from the pass
  • Carry your licence, RC and hotel booking — they are checked at the gate
  • Weekend e-pass caps of 8,000 vehicles fill in April, May and late December

Trip planning

  • Two nights is the right length from Mysore; the short drive means you do not lose a day each way
  • Mudumalai safari fits naturally on the way in or out, since it is on your road
  • Coorg is the natural onward leg and turns this into a 5 to 7 night circuit
  • Coaches and tempo travellers must take the Gudalur road, not Sigur
  • In monsoon, Gudalur is the safer road of the two regardless of vehicle

Adding Mysore sightseeing, or carrying on to Coorg

Plenty of our Mysore guests are visiting Mysore in its own right and tacking on Ooty, or the reverse, and both work well. A clean plan is a full day for Mysore — the palace, Chamundi Hill and Brindavan Gardens — then the morning drive across Bandipur, two nights in Ooty, and back. Because the reserve is the scenery, the transfer day is not wasted time the way a plains drive would be.

Coorg is the other obvious extension, and it sits on the far side of Mysore rather than near Ooty, so it belongs at one end of the trip rather than in the middle. Treated as a proper circuit — Mysore, Ooty, Coorg over six or seven nights — the published mid-range price runs ₹26,000 to ₹35,200 per person. Our honest view, though, is that if Ooty is the reason for the trip, four nights in the Nilgiris covering Ooty town, Coonoor, Pykara, Avalanche and Mudumalai gives you more than a rushed three-destination loop with two transfer days eaten by driving.

Questions we answer daily

How far is Ooty from Mysore and how long does it take?

125 km and 3 to 3.5 hours by the direct road through Bandipur and Masinagudi. That road climbs the Sigur ghat's 36 hairpin bends and is for cars only. The alternative via Gudalur is about 158 km, longer but the route coaches and buses must take.

What time do the Bandipur and Mudumalai gates close on the Mysore road?

They are shut to cars and buses from 21:00 to 06:00 every night under a Karnataka High Court order in force since 2010, and the ban is strictly enforced. Both roads between Mysore and Ooty pass the same Theppakadu gates, so there is no night alternative in either direction.

What time should we leave Ooty to drive back to Mysore?

By 17:00. That puts you at the Theppakadu gates around 18:15 and in Mysore by about 19:45, with daylight on the Sigur hairpins. Leaving after 19:45 means reaching a closed gate and waiting until 06:00, so a late dinner in Ooty is not worth the gamble.

What does a Mysore to Ooty cab cost?

Outstation cabs are billed per kilometre with a 250 km daily minimum, so a sedan at ₹12 a km works out around ₹3,000 plus driver bata of ₹400 to ₹600 a night, an Innova at ₹18 a km more. Because Mysore to Ooty is only 125 km, a one-way drop is charged at the same 250 km minimum as a round trip.

How many days do you need in Ooty from Mysore?

Two nights is the sweet spot. Mysore is close at 125 km and 3 to 3.5 hours, so unlike Bangalore you do not lose a full day each way. Two nights covers Ooty town and Coonoor comfortably; a third night adds Pykara or a Mudumalai safari on the way back.

Do Karnataka cars need a Nilgiris e-pass to enter Ooty from Mysore?

Yes. Only TN-43 Nilgiris registrations are exempt, so every Mysore car needs the free pass from epass.tnega.org filed before travel. You show the QR at the Masinagudi or Mel Gudalur check-post with your licence, RC and hotel booking, and pay green tax of ₹150 to ₹300 in cash.

Which route from Mysore is better, Masinagudi or Gudalur?

Masinagudi for cars in daylight — it is the direct 125 km road but climbs Sigur's 36 hairpin bends. Gudalur, about 158 km, is longer and steadier and is the only route coaches and tempo travellers are permitted on. Neither avoids the 21:00 to 06:00 night gate.

Can we add Mysore sightseeing or Coorg to an Ooty trip?

Yes. Mysore itself — the palace, Chamundi Hill, Brindavan — deserves a day before or after Ooty. Coorg turns it into a five to seven night circuit; the published mid-range price for a Mysore, Ooty and Coorg six to seven night tour runs ₹26,000 to ₹35,200 per person.

Is a Mysore to Ooty day trip possible?

Physically yes, but we talk most people out of it. At 125 km and 3 to 3.5 hours each way, a same-day return leaves barely four hours in the hills and forces a late crossing of the forest gate on the way back. One night turns the same drive into a real visit for the cost of a room and a little more vehicle time.
